Supporting police campaigns

Each year we provide publicity support to the Scottish Police Service’s road safety enforcement campaigns.

In recent years these campaigns have been:

  • April – Speed watch
  • August – Summer safety
  • Christmas and New Year period – Festive safety

These campaigns provide Scotland’s eight police forces the chance to join together and raise awareness of key road safety messages.

The campaigns are organised by the Association of Chief Police Officers Scotland (ACPOS) Road Policing Standing Committee National Campaigns Working Group.

The Working Group organises any press launches and liaises with Road Safety Scotland regarding publicity materials for distribution.

2007-2008 overview

The good relationship with ACPOS, which is supported also by local Road Safety Units, was maintained during this year. The added value brought to campaigns by the Scottish Government marketing unit, and its PR and advertising agencies, enhanced campaigns by making use of national paid-for publicity, and other media platforms to raise awareness of the issues being highlighted during the campaigns. In this year, Road Safety Scotland supported the ACPOS summer, winter and festive safety campaigns. Smarts PR Agency also worked closely with ACPOS Communications to enhance the various campaigns throughout the year.

2006-2007 overview

In this year, Road Safety Scotland supported the ACPOS summer, winter and festive safety campaigns. Over 30,000 "RU 2 CLOSE?" stickers were distributed via road safety practitioners, and supporting material was produced to support other ACPOS activity on mobile phones. A bank of messages was agreed and approved for use on VMS signs, supporting campaigns at appropriate times throughout the year. IAS Smarts PR Agency also worked closely with ACPOS Communications to enhance the various campaigns throughout the year.

2005-2006 overview

The good relationship with ACPOS was maintained during this year. The Director sat on the ACPOS National Campaigns Working Group, and the Chair of that group represented ACPOS on the Road Safety Executive Committee. This relationship, supported by local Road Safety Units and with the added value of the Scottish Executive’s PR and advertising agencies, has enhanced campaigns by making use of national paid-for publicity, and other media platforms.

In this year, Road Safety Scotland supported ACPOS campaigns, including: the summer and festive safety campaigns; the “R U 2 Close?” campaign and winter safety campaigns. PR activity utilised the advantage of a joined-up approach with ACPOS to add additional authority to “Don’t risk it” messages, particularly on the issue of drinking and driving.

2004-2005 overview

A concerted effort was made in the course of 2004 to co-ordinate activity between ACPOS and Road Safety Scotland. Close liaison between them and local road safety units, coupled with the added value of the Scottish Executive’s PR agency has allowed local campaigns to make use of national paid-for publicity.
